The Stadtgottesacker, the Old Cemetery of Halle
Flyer on the history of the Campo Santo then and now
The old city cemetery of Halle – built from 1557 according to Italian Campo Santo plants – is a masterpiece of Renaissance north of the Alps. The rhomboid area on the Martinsberg measures approximately 113 x 123 x 129 x 150 meters and is surrounded by a five to six meters high wall.
Since the Middle Ages the area was used for mass burials in plague times. It was built by Nickel Hoffmann in over thirty years of construction. The huge wall has 94 tombs, which are bridged by arcades that open to the inside.
Under the arcades and in the field notables of the town and famous professors of Halle University found their rest, among them (not in flyer mentioned in) Gottfried Olearius, Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen, Johann Gottlieb Heineccius, Johann Christoph von Dreyhaupt, Johann Salomo Semler, Wilhelm Gesenius, Robert Franz, Richard von Volkmann, Carl Wentzel and many more.
